Best Plants For The Beginner's Garden

Best Plants For The Beginner's Garden

Interested in starting a garden this spring? Here are a few beginner-friendly plants to help get you started.

Vegetables & Fruits

Leafy greens and onions are typically planted in the spring, and are very forgiving and adaptable crops. Zucchini brings in a great harvest, so do sugar-snap peas and potatoes. Garlic is also great for beginning gardeners, as it is incredibly resistant to diseases and pests. Most sources I found recommended planting garlic cloves in the fall.

As for fruit, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries produce a bounty of produce and don't need replanting as often as other crops. We planted strawberries one spring and had them every summer for three years!

Herbs

Herbs grow well indoors or outdoors, making them a great option for those who don't particularly love battling the elements. They can also be harvested year-round, if cared for correctly.

Their calming fragrance and ability to tolerate drought make lavender plants one of my favorite herbs. Bonus, it's one of the easier herbs to take care of! Basil, parsley, and rosemary are also great for beginners.

Flowers

Their bright colors, aromatic scents, and tendency to attracted unique fauna (ie hummingbirds, bees, butterflies) make flowers my preferred plants to grow. They add a touch of magic and wonder to any outdoor or indoor space.

Daffodils, marigolds, peony, zinnias, hostas, and black-eyed susans are some great options for beginners.

Good luck to new and returning gardeners this season 🍀 We wish you the best!
